The 'AmHyPower' collaborative project aims to enable the use of ammonia as an energy carrier via energy conversion modules. Due to ammonia's lower volumetric energy density compared to diesel - and thus the increased bunkering requirements on a ship - a second objective is to implement sophisticated tanktechnology for pressurized liquefied ammonia using innovative lightweight construction.
A measurable overall objective of the сollaborative project is the successful demonstration and testing of an innovative system concept consisting of an enclosed, intrinsically safe, and highly automated energy module that consumes ammonia, powers an internal hydrogen engine by cracking the ammonia, and delivers mechanical energy from the module via a rotating shaft. This mechanical energy can then be coupled to propulsion systems or generators on the ship. Propulsion applications outside the maritime sector would also be possible.
A second measurable overall objective is the successful demonstration and testing of a lightweight free-form tank, the technology of which allows for the efficient utilization of available space within an inland waterway vessel's hull.
